I've lived in Santa Maria for my entire life, so I can safely say that there is not very much to do here. And don't assume that this is the normal antsy teen type attitude, its the truth. But don't fear, 45 minutes north is San Luis Obispo and an hour south is Santa Barbara, both of which have much more pleasant surroundings and more activities. Also both towns have colleges in them as well, so they're full of life. Though there may not be much to do in close proximity without really knowing the area, if you're willing to drive you can get to more exciting towns.
Then there's the actual landscape around Santa Maria, which is mostly farms. But maybe a 30 minute drive you can go to the beach or the lake. As you can see Santa Maria itself isn't really a LA or NY, but around it you can find ways to entertain yourself. Good company, frequent road trips and adventuring will assure that you will enjoy the 2 years (or however many you choose) that you spend at Hancock.
